A Sexual Dysfunction (DSM IV-TR Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision 2000 - American Psychiatric Association) is characterized by an abnormality of the process underlying the sexual response cycle or pain associated with sexual intercourse . The sexual response cycle can be divided into the following 4 phases:

1. Desire: This phase consists of fantasies about sexual activity and desire for sexual practice.
2. Excitement: In this phase there is a feeling of sexual pleasure soggetttiva associated with physiological changes (swelling and penile erection in humans, pelvic vasocongestion, vaginal lubrication and expansion, swelling of external genitalia in women).
3. Orgasm: This stage consists of a peak of sexual pleasure, with loosening of sexual tension and rhythmic contraction of perineal muscles and reproductive organs. In the male there is the feeling of ejaculatory inevitability, followed by the emission of semen. In the female there are contractions (not always subjectively perceived) of the outer third of the vagina.
4. Resolution is the final phase during which one experiences a feeling of muscle relaxation and general well-being.

Sexual disorders can occur in one of these 4 stages. It will be the clinician to collect information useful for diagnosis and immediate therapeutic intervention.
